PANAJI - The Maharasthtra-Karnataka sector of the Konkan railway would be electrified over the next couple of years, a top railway official said here Tuesday.

“We are looking at the next couple of years for electrification and patch doubling of our tracks,” said

Bhanu Tayal, managing director, Konkan Railway Corporation.

He said if the central railway and the southern railway electrified the Roha-Panvel and Mangalore sectors respectively, then Konkan Railway over the next couple of years could look at electrifying its entire route in Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.

Tayal also said the KRCL was looking at phasing out the level crossings in its Goa sector and actively considering construction of over bridges, if the state government share the construction costs.

He said a new railway station at Loliem, a village along the Karnataka-Goa border, was also on the cards. “A new station will help us increase our carrying capacity. A railway station (RS) at Loliem between Canacona (RS) and Karwar (RS) will certainly help in decreasing the time consumed in train crossings.”

Tayal said Konkan Railway was considering converting the festive train from Margao to Vailankini, a Christian pilgrimage site in Tamil Nadu, into a once a week service.
