Tokyo shares rise in mid-morning trading

TOKYO - Tokyo stocks rose slightly in mid-morning trading Monday, with gains in high-technology issues even as the strong yen dragged down the market.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 0.50 percent, or 47.41 points, from Friday’s close. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues rose 7.46 points, or 0.90 percent.

Mazda Motor lost as much as 4 percent on news over the weekend that Ford Motor Co would sell most of its 11 percent stake in the carmaker. Mazda’s stock ended the morning session down 0.5 percent.

On currency markets the dollar traded at 81.38 yen, from 81.29 yen at the close of trading Friday.

The euro traded at $1.394, down from $1.405 late Friday, and at 112.90-92 yen, down from 114.25-28 yen.
