ISLAMABAD - The European Union has banned the import of seafood from Pakistan for its failure to maintain food safety regulations, a media report said.

Federal Minister for Trade Makhdoom Amin Fahim told parliament that the EU has deleted names of Pakistani seafood export companies from its list. The main reason was that the companies failed to come up to the international standard of food safety, the Online news agency reported.

In order to resume exports, more than 200 boats have been built according to EU standards and laboratory services under the marine fisheries department are being revamped, the minister said.

The trade ministry has also requested the EU to send its officials for inspection.
