Pay hike for Punjab’s mayors, councilors

CHANDIGARH - In a pre-Diwali bonanza for mayors, councillors and other senior functionaries of municipal bodies in Punjab the honorarium paid to them has been almost doubled, a minister announced Thursday.

The monthly honorarium has been increased from Rs.10,000 to Rs. 15,000 for mayors. Senior deputy mayors will get a raise from Rs. 8,000 to Rs.12,000 with additional raise of perks of telephone, meeting and constituency allowances, Local Government Minister

Manoranjan Kalia announced.

Deputy mayors wil get an increase from Rs.7,000 to Rs.10,000 along with a raise in different allowances, he added.

Kalia said that the honorarium stood revised from Nov 1.

The allowances of municipal councilors too have been increased. Class I municipal council presidents will get a raise of honorarium from Rs.5,000 to Rs.7,500, while that of presidents of class II municipal councils stands revised from Rs.4,000 to Rs.6,000 per month.

The constituency allowance for councilors has also been increased from Rs.3,000 to Rs.4,500. They have also been given a hike in daily allowance.

The honorarium of improvement trust chairmen has been revised from Rs.7,000 to Rs.10,000 per month.
