16 million tonnes of paddy procured in Punjab, Haryana

CHANDIGARH - Punjab and Haryana have procured nearly 16 million tonnes of paddy in the first 45 days of the procurement process, officials said here Tuesday.

In Punjab, government agencies and private millers procured over 12.6 million tonnes of paddy, officials said.

In Haryana, nearly 3.4 million tonnes of paddy has arrived in grain markets so far.

Over 98.6 percent of the total paddy procurement in Punjab has been done by government agencies through nearly 1,700 procurement centres in grain markets across the state. The rest of the paddy stock has been purchased by private rice millers.

Ludhiana district was leading in procurement operations followed by Sangrur and Patiala.

In neighbouring Haryana, out of the total arrival, nearly 2.35 million tonnes was procured by government agencies while the rest was purchased by private millers.

Haryana Food and Supplies Minister Mahender Partap Singh said Tuesday that Kurukshetra district was leading in paddy arrivals followed by Karnal and Fatehabad districts.
