Srinagar-Jammu highway opens for one way traffic

SRINAGAR - The Srinagar-Jammu highway, where more than 500 vehicles were stranded due to heavy snowfall, was opened for one way traffic Saturday.

The vehicles were stranded at various places on the highway between Udhampur and Bannihal towns in Jawahar tunnel area of the road.

The Jammu-Srinagar highway is one of the two road links between the valley and the rest of the country. All essential supplies to the valley are routed through this highway.

The road has been opened one way and vehicles stranded on the highway have been allowed to move from Jammu to Srinagar.

No vehicular movement will be allowed on the road today (Saturday) from Srinagar to Jammu,” said an official of the traffic department here.

The valley received the first heavy snowfall of the season Friday which brought down the temperatures here.

The minimum temperature was 0.4 degrees Celsius in Srinagar today (Saturday). It was minus 7.6 degrees in Leh and minus 11 degrees in Kargil,” said an official of the weather department here.

The weather office has forecast a cloudy sky and isolated rain or snow in some places Sunday.
