EU: Fewer Europeans shun vacation as economy is up

BRUSSELS — A European Union survey says fewer Europeans are passing on vacations this year as the economy recovers from recession.

Only 20 percent of some 30,000 European Union residents questioned last month said they had no plans to travel this year, according to a Tuesday European Commission report.

This is a decrease from last year, when 33 percent said they did not travel.

Europeans’ favorite vacation spot is Spain, followed by France and Italy, the survey said.

Some 58 percent of Europeans made their own travel arrangements instead of using a travel agency, it said.
