TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp, the world’s largest automaker, said Thursday it had to recall about 1.5 million vehicles worldwide over possible problems with fuel and brake systems, the latest in a series of recalls that damaged the carmaker’s once-stellar reputation.

Toyota submitted recall reports to the transport ministry in Japan for about 600,000 Toyota and Lexus models produced between 2002 to 2006, and an additional 900,000 sold overseas in North America, Europe, China and Australia.

The company said in a statement that in some cases a small amount of brake fluid could leak and cause a decline in brake performance.

The carmaker is to recall 11 models in Japan - including its Crown and Lexus IS and GS models - due to brake system defects, and its Voxy and Noah models over speedometer problems.

The global recalls involve Avalon, Highlander, as well as Lexus RX330, GS300, IS250 and IS350 models.

Toyota had to recall more than 8 million vehicles worldwide late last year and early this year over problems with unintended acceleration.
