NEW DELHI - The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Sunday demolished 180 shops in central Delhi for constructing a road, an official said.

“The shops were demolished at Panchkuian Road furniture market as the owners were given alternative shops in Gole Market but they were not vacating the space,” the official said.

The Delhi Metro wants to construct a road from Rajiv Chowk to Jhandewalan but it was delayed as the shop owners were not vacating the place.

The matter was under dispute for the last five years as the shop owners had got a stay on the demolition from a local court.

“The MCD demolished the shops as the duration of stay order got over Saturday,” he said.
