Cuba to build golf courses to attract tourists

HAVANA - The tourism ministry in Cuba has said it is negotiating with international construction companies to build 16 golf courses in a bid to attract more tourists to the country, a media report said.

Experts, including chief executive of the International Association of Golf Tourism Operators Peter Walton, have said Cuba could become the “powerhouse” for this form of recreation, Xinhua reported citing a ministry.

Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero said an agreement has already been approved by the council of ministers and it was in the execution phase.

The capital for the projects would be from both foreign investments and the Cuban government, he said.

Currently, Cuba only has two golf clubs - the Varadero Golf Club and the Capdevila in Havana.
