NEW DELHI - Indian Railways will observe 2011-12 as the “Year of Clean Energy,” Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee told the Lok Sabha while presenting the railway budget Friday.
“Railways are always environment friendly and are considered evergreen. It is also the most fuel efficient mode of transport. I have declared 2011-12 as the ‘Year of Green Energy’,” she told the lower house of parliament.
Sharing some of the green initiatives, Banerjee said: “Free supply of 14 lakh CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) to railways households and phasing out of incandescent lamps, use of biodiesel, CNG (compressed natural gas), LNG (liquefied natural gas) in locos, workshops, and increased use of solar energy at stations.”
