Sensex closes 193 points up

MUMBAI - A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Thursday closed 193 points higher as buying picked up in the later half of the day.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,345.12 points, closed at 18,494.16 points, up 193.26 points or 1.06 percent from its previous close at 18,300.9 points.

The 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange moved up 1.22 percent higher to end at 5,548.65 points.

Broader markets also shot up, with the BSE midcap index closing 0.86 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index ending 0.92 percent up.
