TAMIL NADU, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- After being hit by a strike at its Tamil Nadu plant, the India production unit of Nokia has resumed production. The strike was called by the agitated workers who demanded a hike in remuneration. The government of the state is going to sign a wage settlement agreement which is valid for long term. Apart from the government the agreement will be signed by the Nokia India’s manufacturing facility management and employees’ labor union representatives as it has been reported.
The Tamil Nadu plant of Nokia is trying to overcome labor problems and at present it employs near about 8,000 employees. The production at this plant ran onto trouble earlier this year when the management decided to suspend 60 workers in January. The labor union stepped in that time too for resolving the problem. The Chennai Plant exports mobile headsets to various countries across the world. Even though the halted production at the Tamil nadu has resumed the worries of Nokia in India are far from over. For the past two years the company which used to be the number one player in the Indian market is facing stiff competition.
Nokia is facing competition in India from the regional companies as well as from its Korean rivals namely LG and Samsung. The brands have made a dent into Nokia’s share over time in almost all segments. The failure to bring out a killer phone based on Android has also cost Nokia in India dearly. The company is also lagging behind rivals in launching dual SIM models which are all the rage these days.
