NAGPUR, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- As the Central Railway is all set to acquire the management of all catering services of Indian railways, the future of more than 36 employees of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation’s Nagpur division has become uncertain. The management is likely to take away the charges of the base kitchens from IRCTC as well. There are 4 cooks, 7 supervisors, 8 trainee cooks as well as 31 group D staffs in the IRCTC’s Nagpur branch. There could be over 500 such workers in the Central Railway zone.
It is not clear what will happen to the staffs employed with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. In future, IRCTC will be allowed to run the food courts, fast food units and food plazas owned by the railway. The Indian Railways officials are also not sure whether the IRCTC staffs will be absorbed or not. However, the senior divisional commercial manager of Central Railway MK Gangeya said that the Railways would not need more time to decide about these IRCTC staff. In Nagpur, the IRCTC earns close to INR 70,000 daily from several stalls and the Jan Ahaar outlets. In summer, the revenues goes up substantially. The railways got 15% of the revenue earned by IRCTC.
The Railways is looking forward to improve the quality of foods over profits. With a number of superfast trains introduced and the number of luxury trains on rise, the railway is not going to compromise on the quality of food served on such trains. There have been several complaints over the quality of food served by the IRCTC in recent times.
