APGENCO Proposal For APPDCL

HYDERABAD, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The AP government has accepted APGENCO’s proposal to set up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Limited, APPDCL in short. The joint venture company will have APGENCO holding 50% equity and IL&FS the other 50%. Post completion of the two 800MW development projects of coal-based Super Critical Thermal Power Station near Krishnapatnam in the Nellore District, which is 150 km north of Chennai, APPDCL is reconstituted with 51% equity of APGENCO and 49% equity of all four APDISCOMS.

APPDCL has plans of implementing the two mega-projects that also include a 2100 MW Karimnagar Combined Cycle Power Plant in near Karimnagar, 160 km north of Hyderabad. It will be divided into three blocks of 700MW capacity. The buildup to the two projects commenced in March 2006 and most activities like statutory clearances, site identification, land acquisition, project reports,availability of inputs, environmental studies, project consultancy services and selection of EPC contractor based on international competitive bidding and substantial progress has been successfully achieved on both the projects. For the 2nd project the EPC contract will be awarded by July, 2010 according to the official website of the company. The gestation period for the project is around 3 years from the date of awarding of the EPC Contract. The total cost of this project has been estimated at Rs.3342 crores.

The 2 X 800 MW power station at Krishnapatnam was awarded the BOP contract in February 2009 and is most likely to be commissioned in 2012-13. The total estimated cost of this project is Rs.8432 crores. It will be financed by German companies PFC and KFW. The aim of both the projects according to APGENCO’s recent statement is the reduction in the supply-demand gap of electricity in the state.
