JAMMU - Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wants the 294-km Jammu-Srinagar turned into a four-lane road at the earliest.

“I want a time frame for the completion of the project,” an official spokesman quoted the chief minister as saying at a meeting with senior officials Friday.

The highway is the only road link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India.

Work on the strategic highway has hit the roadblocks of climate and the terrain.

The highway is double-lane, but at several places it is single track because of landslides and the shooting-stone-prone areas.

The road often remains closed during rainy and winter seasons because of inclement weather.
