Authorities: SF area officer injured during arrest

OAKLAND, Calif. — Authorities say a San Francisco area transit police officer who removed an unruly passenger from a train suffered cuts and a concussion when heavy-duty glass fell as the officer attempted to place the man under arrest.

Bay Area Rapid Transit police Cmdr. Daniel Hartwig says the officer responded Saturday evening to a report of a disturbance and found 37-year-old Michael Joseph Gibson yelling racial slurs and challenging others to fight.

Hartwig said Sunday that the officer has been treated and released.

BART says in statement that a passenger’s video of the incident, which took place at the West Oakland station, has been uploaded to YouTube.

BART’s police force has been under intense scrutiny since an officer fatally shot an unarmed passenger on New Year’s Day at another Oakland BART station.
