Summary Box: Unemployment rises in three-quarters of metro areas as students seek summer work

Summary Box: Unemployment up in most metro areas
WIDESPREAD INCREASE: The unemployment rate in about three-quarters of the nation’s largest metro areas rose last month. That reverses the trend of the previous three months, when joblessness fell in most metro areas.
SUMMER JOBS: Much of the rise was driven by nearly a million teenagers joining the work force in search of summer jobs.
SEASON IS THE REASON: The government usually filters out the impact of summer jobseekers through its seasonal adjustment process, which seeks to reflect broader economic trends. The metro unemployment report, however, isn’t seasonally adjusted.
