USDA: South Dakota’s corn harvest remains behind

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Freezing weather is helping South Dakota farmers whose fields have been too wet to harvest.

The U.S. Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that six days were suitable for field work in the past week.

The sorghum and sunflower harvests both are near completion, but South Dakota’s corn harvest still lags behind. The report says only 73 percent of the corn crop has been harvested, compared with the average of 98 percent.

Livestock conditions in South Dakota continue to remain mostly in the good to excellent range.
