Record yield for Louisiana rice in 2009

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Louisiana rice farmers averaged a record 6,300 pounds of rice per acre last year.

It says that’s up 470 pounds per acre from 2008, when Hurricanes Ike and Gustav hit south Louisiana. The previous record was 6,140 pounds in 2007.

The state’s total rice production was estimated at 1.46 million tons, nearly 1.3 million of that long grain rice.
