Summary Box: Stocks climb on stronger earnings
INVESTORS PROFIT: Stronger earnings reports from companies including Harley-Davidson Inc., industrial equipment maker Illinois Tool Works Inc., and regional bank Marshall & Ilsley Corp. drove the stock market higher Tuesday.
ENERGY BOOST: The market also drew support from a rise in energy stocks after oil prices recovered from a two-week slide.
TOUGHER CROWD: Analysts said expectations about the strength of corporate profits for the first three months of the year are growing so it’s getting harder for companies to dazzle investors with better numbers.
