Websense moves to 1st-quarter profit
SAN DIEGO — Websense Inc. posted a small first-quarter profit Tuesday, helped by smaller one-time expenses and an uptick in revenue.
The company, which provides Internet filtering and security software, said it is signing longer and bigger contracts.
It earned $835,000, or 2 cents per share, after a loss of $1.1 million, or 2 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.
Excluding unusual items such as stock-based compensation and restructuring charges, Websense said it would have earned 26 cents per share, down from 32 cents per share a year ago.
Revenue climbed 2.8 percent to $79.8 million.
Results fell short of Wall Street expectations. On average, analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected 27 cents per share on revenue of $82.6 million.
Websense shares fell $1.49, or 6 percent, to $22.50 in extended trading.
Looking ahead, the company forecast a first quarter adjusted profit of 26 cents to 29 cents per share and revenue of $82 million to $84 million.
Analysts expect 29 cents per share on revenue of $84.3 million.
