Summary Box: Home delivery cuts at Detroit dailies

SCALING BACK: Detroit’s daily newspapers say they came out ahead financially by continuing to print every day but making home deliveries only on the three days a week that generate the most advertising.

THE BUSINESS MODEL: Cutting home delivery dramatically reduced the newspapers’ expenses without causing revenue to fall by the same margin. The result: more money in the bank, fewer layoffs in the newsroom.

LOOKING AHEAD: Other newspapers might consider similar steps to save money, given that advertising revenue has been plunging for three years.
