Journal Sentinel to cut 39 jobs, none in newsroom

MILWAUKEE — The publisher of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is cutting its work force by 39 employees, or about 3 percent.

Journal Sentinel Inc. said Monday the cuts primarily will affect the paper’s circulation field operations and other business departments. No newsroom workers will be affected.

Journal Sentinel President and Publisher Elizabeth Brenner says the cuts were a “difficult decision,” made necessary by ongoing challenges in the advertising sector.

Journal Sentinel Inc. is owned by Journal Communications Inc., whose stock rose 12 cents Monday to close at $3.83. That’s a gain of 3.2 percent.

The company says it will record a pretax work force reduction charge of $600,000 in the fourth quarter.
