Bemis in Justice Dept. talks over proposed deal

NEENAH, Wis. — Bemis Co. said Tuesday that it is in talks with the Justice Department over concerns related to its proposed $1.2 billion acquisition of Rio Tinto PLC’s Alcan Packaging Foods America operations.

The Neenah, Wis. maker of flexible packaging and pressure-sensitive materials did not disclose specifics about its discussions with the Justice Department. Bemis announced its planned acquisition of the Rio Tinto subsidiary in July.

Bemis said it no longer expects regulatory approval of the deal by year’s end. It now expects to receive the necessary approvals in early 2010.
