Cleveland airport jammed a day after outage

CLEVELAND — Flights are largely running on schedule at Cleveland Hopkins airport, but lines are long a day after a power outage canceled scores of flights.

The airport’s Web site early Monday showed only a very small number of delays. However, officials warned travelers to arrive early and expect the airport to be very busy, as airlines try to accommodate travelers left stranded by the blackout in the terminal.

The airport and Akron-based FirstEnergy Corp. say the airport’s power went out just before 7 a.m. Sunday when road salt that had built up on a utility pole caused a fire, and the pole fell onto lines. Crews got the electricity back on around 2:30 p.m.

Continental Airlines, which operates a hub at Hopkins, allowed customers to rebook flights without penalty.
