Children’s jackets recalled because of drawstrings

NEW YORK — Two types of girls’ jackets and some boys jackets sold at Burlington Coat Factory, Bon Ton department stores and other retailers were recalled on Wednesday due to strangulation hazards.

Watchdog agency the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and importer Byer California issued a voluntary recall of about 600 girls’ cargo pocket jacket sold from December 2008 through September 2009 for about $12.

Drawstrings on the neck and waist can pose a strangulation or entrapment hazard to children, the CPSC said. No injuries have been reported.

The jackets were brown with a style number 2029G1J printed on the tag inside the jacket.

Separately, the CPSC and distributor Regaliti are issuing a voluntary recall for 3,600 girls’ hooded jackets sold at Burlington Coat Factory for about $4 because their drawstrings could pose a choking hazard. Available from November 2007 to September 2009, they were cropped and made of a velvet-like material. No injuries have been reported.

The jackets were sold under the Betty Blue brand name in pink, red, blue and brown in children’s sizes small through extra large. “Betty Blue Girls” is printed on the tag on the collar; the CPSC didn’t list a style number.

Three types of boys’ sweatshirts with drawstrings were recalled for similar reasons: Locks All Over Boys’ Hoody (style number MSK7SK3400B in white with colored printed padlocks), All Over Skaters Boys’ Hoody (SKATBS7K302B in white with red and orange skaters) and Rock Mask Boys’ Hoody (KROCKF7K300K in solid black with imprint). About 2,800 were distributed by Brand Evolution in Philadelphia, Pa. No injuries have been reported. They were sold at The Burlington Coat Factory and other retailers.

Consumers should remove the drawstring or bring all recalled items back to the store where they purchased the item for a full refund.
