3 bids submitted to buy Honolulu Star-Bulletin

HONOLULU — Three potential buyers have submitted bids to acquire the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Owner Black Press offered the newspaper for sale March 15 to satisfy U.S. Justice Department requirements regarding a planned purchase of The Honolulu Advertiser from Gannett Co.

Bids were due Monday.

Publisher Dennis Francis says qualified bidders will receive additional financial information to possibly amend their bids by April 19.

Francis says a bid by Texas businessman Brian Ferguson was nonstandard because it includes the Hawaii newspaper MidWeek, which wasn’t put up for sale.

State Sen. Sam Slom says he and Malia Zimmerman also put in a bid. The third bid came from Big Island entrepreneur Frederick Harris.

Details of the bids were not disclosed.
