Summary Box: Job openings jump by 300K in April

BIG JUMP: Job openings rose to their highest level in 16 months in April, the government said Tuesday, suggesting private employers may boost hiring soon. Openings jumped by 300,000 to 3.1 million.

COMPETITION HEAVY: Still, the figures mean there were about five unemployed people, on average, for each open position. That’s the lowest ratio since March 2009, but above the pre-recession level of 1.8.

SLOW IMPROVEMENT: Other surveys suggest hiring will increase at a slow pace. Staffing agency Manpower Inc. said its quarterly survey found slightly more companies plan to hire in the third quarter than the second.
