Miss. giving $520,000 grant to build railroad spur

HORN LAKE, Miss. — The state of Mississippi is providing $520,000 to the city of Horn Lake for construction of a railroad spur line that will service the expansion of Newly Weds Foods.

The grant was provided through the Mississippi Freight Rail Revolving Loan/Grant Program. The program is administered by the Mississippi Development Authority.

The federal Economic Development Administration approved $1.1 million in September for the project.

Officials say the project will create 20 jobs and help save 300 other jobs throughout DeSoto County.

Newly Weds Foods bought the Horn Lake plant from the old Flavorite Laboratories in 2000.

The Chicago-based company produces a number of products, including food coatings, seasonings, breading and ingredients for food processing and the food service industry.
