Power restored on Amtrak lines after 3-hour outage

NEWARK, New Jersey — Power has been restored to Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor after a three-hour train stoppage stranded commuters and holiday travelers.

Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole says power was restored around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

An electrical problem in northern New Jersey forced the railroad to halt trains in and out of New York’s Penn Station around 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.

That left commuters and holiday travelers stuck or scrambling for alternatives as service slowed to a crawl or stopped in much of the Northeast.

There’s no word what caused the problem. It affected service as far south as Washington, D.C., and as far north as Boston.

It was not immediately known how long delays would persist.
