33 Vermont state employees sue for overtime pay
MONTPELIER, Vt. — Thirty-three Vermont government employees are suing the state for not paying them overtime they think they’re owed.
The employees are earn at least $20 an hour to $31 an hour and are in the judiciary, supervisory, non-management and corrections bargaining units of the Vermont State Employees Association.
They claim they are owed time and half instead of straight overtime.
The workers hope the court will make it a class-action lawsuit, possibly allowing several hundred more employees to join in.
The suit doesn’t ask for specific damages but says federal law would require the state to pay double damages and attorneys’ fees.
Vermont’s human resources commissioner declined to comment, saying she hadn’t seen the lawsuit, yet.
