No proposals yet for southeast Kansas casino; lottery pushes application deadline to April

Kansas Lottery still seeking casino proposal
TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas Lottery officials are still waiting to receive any casino proposals for the state’s southeast corner.
A deadline passed in the last week for developers to apply for a contract to build and operate a casino for the lottery in Crawford or Cherokee county. With no proposal submitted, the lottery automatically extended the deadline to April 16.
In 2008, Penn National Gaming Inc. received state approval for a casino in Cherokee County. But the Pennsylvania company dropped its plans, citing potential competition from an Indian casino just across the Oklahoma border.
In October 2009, Wichita firm Ozark Trail submitted a proposal, but the lottery said the company couldn’t finance its venture and lacked the experience in casino management required by Kansas law.
