GM’s Whitacre: Austin added to Volt rollout list
AUSTIN, Texas — GM CEO Ed Whitacre says Austin will join the cities where the company will roll out its electric car, the Chevrolet Volt, later this year.
The states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are also being added to the Volt debut list, which originally included Washington, D.C., California and Michigan.
GM says the car can travel 40 miles on electric power alone. After that, a small gasoline engine will kick in to generate power for the electric motor.
Whitacre made the announcement Thursday when speaking to the Austin Chamber of Commerce.
Whitacre says that to celebrate the rollout, the Chevrolet Volt will embark on a four-day “Freedom Drive” from Austin to New York.
GM has indicated the Volt should be in showrooms in November.
