Toyota says US sales fall 14 pct from May to June
TORRANCE, Calif. — Toyota says its U.S. sales fell 14 percent from May to June as questions mount about the health of the broader economy.
Toyota Motor Corp.’s overall sales have been hurting this year following its safety-related recalls of more than 8.5 million vehicles worldwide.
The automaker now says about 270,000 of its vehicles, including those in its Lexus luxury line, have faulty engines that could cause them to stall. It has not announced a recall of the vehicles but says it is evaluating measures to deal with the problem.
Toyota has been trying to boost sales with deep promotions, including zero-percent financing and free maintenance.
Last month’s sales rose 7 percent compared with June 2009, boosted by top sellers such as the Camry and Corolla sedans.
