Summary Box: Strong sales buoy Philips’ 2Q profit
SHOOTS, SCORES: Fans buying new flat-screen televisions to watch the World Cup helped Dutch electronics maker Royal Philips Electronics NV post a strong rise in second-quarter profit.
BOTTOM LINE: Net income rose to 262 million euros ($340 million) from 45 million euros at the same time last year. Revenue climbed to 6.19 billion euros ($8.03 billion) from 5.23 billion euros a year ago, when the company was hit hard by the global economic crisis.
WHAT’S AHEAD: Given that many customers in the market for a new TV bought pre-World Cup, Philips sees sales growth easing off for the rest of this year.
