Product recall: alfalfa sprouts

The following recalls have been announced:

—Certain alfalfa sprout products by Specialty Farms of Bridgeport, Conn., because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. No illnesses have been reported.

The recall covers Specialty Farms brand Organic Alfalfa Sprouts Blend, UPC 1509800108, and Organic Sprout Salad, UPC 8192400024, in 4-ounce plastic containers with a best-if-sold-by date of 8/3/2010; and Stop & Shop brand Natures Promise Organic Alfalfa Sprouts, 4-ounce containers and 8-ounce bags, UPC 8826704741 and 8826704102, and Natures Promise Organic Zesty Sprouts, 4-ounce containers, UPC 8826703903, with a best-if-sold-by date of 8/1/2010. All products dated 8/4/2010 and beyond are not included in this recall.

The products have been distributed in Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. For more information, contact the company at 203-366-6919 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EDT.

—Dietary supplement products sold as Ejaculoid XXTREME and Stimuloid II by Nutraloid Labs Inc. of Kingston, N.Y. The company says the Food and Drug Administration has determined that the products contain sulfoaildenafil, an FDA-approved drug for male erectile dysfunction, making the products unapproved drugs.

The active drug ingredient is not listed on the product label. The undeclared ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease often take nitrates. No illnesses have been reported.

The recalled products were sold in black plastic bottles to distributors and on the Internet. They are described as Ejaculoid XXTREME in 30 capsules/bottle, lot 79935 12/12 and UPC 804879178682; and Stimuloid II in 30 capsules/bottle, lot 79936 12/12 and UPC 804879178675.
