Yamaha India Seeking Expansion

NOIDA, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Yamaha recently unveiled three new bike models for the Indian market in its bid to strengthen its position in the Indian car market. It wants to hike its car share in India from 3 percent to 10 percent by the year 2012. The Japan based bike maker wants to increase its business in India as it is doing quite well in other Asian countries like Vietnam, Thailand as well as Indonesia. The YBR 125 model has a 123 CC engine and it is priced below INR 50000, the model offers a mileage of 71 km per liter in standard conditions.

The other model Yamaha SZ is priced at INR 49,000. This model is fitted with a larger 153 cc engine and gives a mileage of little over 60 km per liter. It also has a variant with electric-start option which of course is priced a tad higher. It is targeted at both rural and urban users as the company officials have said. Yukimine Tsuji, the Managing Director and CEO of Yamaha India said that with these attractive and reasonably priced models the company seeks inroad in rural markets and suburban regions. The company is witnessing record sales in the current fiscal.

Yamaha sold near about 2.2-lakh units in the last year in India. The company wants to double the figure this year and in the upcoming years wants to take it to 10 lakh units. The YBR 125 model will be pitted against rival Hero Honda’s Splendour and higher end models SZ and SZ-X will battle it out with Honda Unicorn as well as Bajaj’s Discover 150 bikes.
