Recalls include strollers, chairs, sledge hammers

Parents can generally count on strollers to be secure, but every now and then a model causes problems.

A double stroller that was recalled this week prompted nearly 200 reports about its tendency to collapse. Fortunately, no serious incidents are known to have occurred.

Also recalled in recent days were folding chairs, sledge hammers, electrical wires and chocolate truffles that could make you ill.

Here are some of the items recalled this week:

DOUBLE STROLLERS

DETAILS: Zooper Tango double strollers made in China and distributed by Lan Enterprises LLC of Hillsboro, Ore., have been recalled. The strollers had model numbers of SL808B and SL808F and were sold at retailers nationwide and through www.babiesrus.com from January 2007 through August 2008.

WHY: The stroller’s frame latch above the front wheels can fail when the stroller hits an object, causing the stroller to unexpectedly collapse. This can result in minor scrapes, cuts and bruises.

INCIDENTS: Among 185 reports received by the company, in one incident a 13-month-old boy and a 3-year-old boy received scrapes and bruises when their stroller hit a sidewalk and the stroller collapsed.

FOLDING CHAIRS

DETAILS: Folding wooden chairs made by White Tiger Traders Co. Ltd. of Taiwan and sold in 2009 at Kroger, Fred Meyer, Ralph’s, Fry’s, Smith’s, Dillon’s, Gerbes, City Market and Baker’s stores nationwide have been recalled.

WHY: The wooden frame can break, posing a fall hazard to consumers.

INCIDENTS: Three reports have been received of chairs breaking, resulting in minor injuries including back and shoulder pain, sprains and contusions.

SLEDGE HAMMERS

DETAILS: Hickory handle sledge hammers made in India and sold at White Cap Construction Supply distributors from April 2009 through May 2010 have been recalled. Eleven different models were included in the recall.

WHY: The head of the sledge hammer can loosen and detach, posing a risk of impact injury.

INCIDENTS: None reported

ELECTRICAL WIRES

DETAILS: THHN electrical wires made by Cerro Wire Inc. of Crothersville, Ind., and sold at Home Depot and Menards stores in 21 states from December 2009 through April 2010 have been recalled.

WHY: While the actual electrical wire has “14 gauge” printed on it, the packaging incorrectly labels the electrical wire as 12 gauge. If used as a 12 gauge wire, it can overload, posing a fire hazard.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

HERB SUPPLEMENT

DETAILS: J&H Besta Corp. of Hicksville, N.Y., is recalling a second lot of Slim-30 Herb Supplement, sold to distributors and retail stores nationwide and in China as well as online.

WHY: It contains weight-loss ingredients that have not been approved for the product: N-Desmethyl sibutramine and traces of sibutramine, drugs used as an appetite suppressant for weight loss. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved this product, so its safety and effectiveness is unknown.

CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES

DETAILS: Moonstruck Chocolate Co. of Portland, Ore. is recalling its 4-piece Cream Cone Chocolate Truffle Collection and the 12-piece Chocolate Malted (or Malt) Cream Cone Chocolate Truffles. They were distributed through Moonstruck Co.-owned Moonstruck Chocolate Cafes, www.moonstruckchocolate.com and through various retailers nationwide.

WHY: They may contain undeclared peanut butter, which can make people who are allergic to peanuts sick.

SUPPLEMENT CAPSULES

DETAILS: Glow Industries Inc. of Perrysburg, Ohio, is recalling select packages of Mr. Magic Male Enhancer supplement capsules.

WHY: They could contain compounds that are chemically similar to the active ingredients in an FDA-approved erectile dysfunction drug. These compounds could interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease. If the active drug ingredients interact with nitrates, it could cause blood pressure to drop to dangerous levels.

HEALTH PRODUCTS

DETAILS: NBTY Acquisition LLC, doing business as Leiner Health Products of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., is recalling select 10-count containers of Air Shield, Air Protector, Immune System Support and AirHealth effervescent tablets, along with eight-stick containers of Stick Packs powder. The recalled items were sold under a variety of product labels.

WHY: They could contain soy that isn’t listed on the packaging. This could be dangerous for people with soy allergies.
