Summary Box: J&J recalls 2 hip replacement systems
PERPETUAL PROBLEM: Johnson & Johnson announces its 11th recall of products since last September — the second disclosed this week.
FAULTY HIPS: J&J’s joint replacement business, DePuy Orthopaedics, is recalling one product that replaces the ball part of the hip and another that replaces the socket after new data from the U.K. shows one in eight patients needs corrective surgery within five years.
DECLINING DEMAND: DePuy decided to phase out both products starting last fall because sales were falling; it’s now developing new, “next-generation” versions.
