Recalls this week: Trampolines, cribs, strollers

NEW YORK — Collapsing trampolines and cribs were among the items recalled this week.

Although about 160,000 of the trampolines and 11,400 of the cribs are being recalled, there have only been four reports of injuries between the two products so far. There have been many more reports of the products breaking down, however.

Here are the recalled items this week:

CRIBS

DETAILS: The Alexander Designs Ltd. brand drop-side cribs were made in China and distributed by J.C. Penney of Plano, Texas. The cribs were sold in JCPenney catalogs and online at JCPenney.com from March 2003 through April 2007.

WHY: The rail hardware can break, fail or be incorrectly assembled, allowing the drop side to detach and create a gap where infants and toddlers can be trapped, strangled or suffocated. These types of detachments also create a fall hazard for children inside.

INCIDENTS: Two reports of drop-side malfunctions, but no reports of injuries.

HOW MANY: About 11,400.

TRAMPOLINES

DETAILS: The Bravo Sports trampolines were made in China and distributed by Bravo Sports of Santa Fe Springs, Calif. The trampolines were sold online, and by sporting goods and mass market retail stores nationwide from January 2007 through September 2010.

WHY: If incorrectly assembled the top rails and legs can bend or break during normal use, causing the trampolines to partially collapse.

INCIDENTS: 247 reports of bent or broken top rails and four reports of injuries.

HOW MANY: About 160,000 units.

ROMAN SHADES

DETAILS: The Roman shades were made in China by Green Mountain Vista Inc. of Williston, Vt. The shades were sold by specialty home textile retail shops and mail order companies nationwide from September 2004 through August 2010.

WHY: They pose a strangulation hazard.

INCIDENTS: No incidents have been reported.

HOW MANY: About 200,000.

DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

DETAILS: Gaspari Nutrition Inc. of Lakewood, N.J., is recalling all lot codes of Novedex XT dietary supplements. The supplement was sold to distributors, wholesalers, retail stores and directly to consumers within the U.S. and internationally, but was discontinued for domestic sales on October 4th 2010.

WHY: They could contain aromatase inhibitors, even though they are not authorized to contain these compounds. Aromatase inhibitors are associated with the following adverse reactions: decreased rate of bone maturation and growth, decreased sperm production, infertility, aggressive behavior, adrenal insufficiency, kidney failure and liver dysfunction. No serious adverse events have been reported.

FRYING PANS

DETAILS: The Castalon frying pans were distributed by Tabletops Unlimited Inc., of Carson, Calif.

WHY: The enamel coating of the pan can crackle and break off after a few uses, posing a burn hazard to consumers.

INCIDENT: One incident of a piece of enamel popping off the pan, causing a minor burn, has been reported.

The pan was sold in a variety of colors and in 14 model numbers at Bed, Bath & Beyond and Wegmans nationwide from May through September 2010.

JOGGING STROLLERS

— DETAILS: The Valco Baby Tri Mode Single and Twin Jogging Strollers were imported by Unique Baby Products USA LLC of Brooklyn, N.Y. and made by Valco Baby of Brooklyn.

WHY: The opening between the grab bar and seat bottom of the stroller can allow an infant’s body to pass through and become entrapped at the neck by the grab bar, posing a strangulation hazard to young children when a child is not harnessed.

INCIDENTS: No injuries have been reported. The product was sold at juvenile product stores and websites including Amazon.com between November 2007 and March 2010.

HOW MANY: About 12,000.

— DETAILS: The Tike Tech Single City X3 and X3 Sport Jogging Strollers were manufactured by Tike Tech Ltd. of Toronto, Ontario.
