Aflac CEO receives $13.2 million in 2009 pay

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Aflac Inc. CEO Daniel Amos’ pay rose 22 percent in 2009, according to an Associated Press calculation of figures disclosed in a regulatory filing.

Amos received a compensation package valued at $13.2 million last year, compared with $10.8 million in 2008.

Amos’ 2009 pay package came during a year when the Columbus, Ga.-based disability insurance provider earned $1.5 billion, or $3.19 per share. The company’s revenue rose to $18.25 billion from $16.55 billion.

Amos’ salary rose 3 percent to nearly $1.4 million in 2009. Amos’ boost in total compensation came from the payout of a performance-based cash bonus totaling more than $4.1 million. He elected to forgo a similar bonus of $2.8 million in 2008.

Amos received perks valued at $216,649 in 2009, including $195,787 for personal security and $11,190 for required travel in company aircraft.

Also in 2009, Aflac awarded Amos restricted stock and options that were worth nearly $7.5 million at the time they were granted, compared with similar awards valued at $9.3 million in 2008.

The AP’s executive pay calculation aims to isolate the value the company’s board placed on the CEO’s total compensation package. The figure includes salary, bonus, incentives, perks and the estimated value of stock options and awards.

The calculations don’t include changes in the present value of pension benefits, and they sometimes differ from the totals companies list in the summary compensation table of proxy statements filed with the SEC, which reflect the size of the accounting charge taken for the executives compensation in the previous fiscal year.

During 2009 shares of Aflac edged up less than 1 percent to close out the year at $46.25.

Mr. Amos,

How do you sleep well at night and how do you tell your mother (if she’s alive) that you have taken in one extravagant bonus after another over many years when people are struggling to make ends meet? You should be ashamed of yourself and I can only hope that your unbridled greed will catch up with you and bring you down. It will happen you know, because greed never gets rewarded in the end.

Putting a stupid duck out there for all these years as a lame attempt at a marketing strategy only demeans those of us who actually have a shred of intelligence and who can see through the transparency of your dummying everything down.

Where’s your social conscience? Why don’t you do something useful with your life - like helping children get a better education or supporting any number of great causes with your ill-gotten gains? Instead, I’m sure you’re just content to live on your riches and make us all suck it up.

You’re a pitiful excuse for a CEO, and I hope you come crashing down like so many of us have had to do because of the likes of you.
