Public hearing on logging rules in Maine
AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Labor is holding a field hearing Friday in Fort Kent on proposed rule changes that crack down on logging companies that hire Canadian contractors instead of Maine workers.
State Sen. Troy Jackson says the proposed rules changes would enhance legislation he sponsored by requirnig new reporting and identification procedures by employers to law enforcement officials.
A state investigation over the summer revealed some questionable logging practices.
Among the concerns is that some companies hiring Canadians do not appear to have a permanent physical presence in the state as required for those seeking foreign labor certification. State law also requires companies to show proof of ownership of the equipment used by Canadian workers.
