More than 100,000 still without power in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — More than 100,000 customers in West Virginia are still without electricity after a weekend storm that dumped more than a foot of snow in some parts of the state.

As of 6:30 a.m. Monday, Appalachian Power, a unit of American Electric Power, reported 89,480 outages, about 20 percent of the utility’s customers in the state.

Appalachian Power spokesman Phil Moye said Sunday that the company hopes to restore power to most customers early in the week, but some may be out until Friday. He blames damaged transmission lines in hard-to-reach areas and just widespread damage.

Allegheny Energy Inc. reported about 20,000 outages early Monday morning. The utility says it expects to restore electricity to its customers by midnight Wednesday.
