Summary Box: Walgreen flu shots and revenue fell
SHORTFALL: Drugstore chain Walgreen Co. said sales of flu, cough, and cold remedies were down in the fiscal second quarter, which hurt its revenue.
IT FLU AWAY: Just three months after the swine flu pandemic led to a surge in demand for flu shots and remedies, Walgreen said vaccinations fell sharply. The company gave almost 2 million flu shots in the second quarter — still more than it gave last flu season, but less than half its first-quarter total.
SHOPPERS STILL BUDGET CONSCIOUS: The company also said sales of discretionary items were down because of the weak economy.
