Ex-DirecTV CEO compensation tops $1.4M in 2009

The former CEO of DirecTV Inc. was awarded $1.4 million in compensation for working the first six months of 2009 before resigning to take another job. That’s according to an Associated Press calculation based on a regulatory filing Wednesday.

But when Chase Carey left to become chief operating officer of News Corp., he also gave up millions of dollars worth of restricted stock awards and options. That was a condition in his employment agreement.

Larry Hunter, DirecTV’s general counsel and secretary, was interim CEO from July to December. Hunter received total compensation of nearly $5 million last year.

The AP calculation aims to isolate the value company boards place on CEOs’ total compensation package. It includes salary, bonus, incentives, perks and the estimated value of stock options and awards.
