Missing NY pension checks located, being delivered
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The post office says it’s found most of the New York state pension checks it lost and is delivering them in Thursday’s mail.
Many of the 60,000 checks mailed Dec. 30 failed to reach retirees’ homes on schedule, causing some to fear the cash-strapped state was hanging on to the money.
Postal Service spokeswoman Karen Mazurkiewicz (meh-ZUHR’-ke-witz) says it turns out the checks got put in with bulk and advertising mail by mistake and were routed from Albany to Springfield, Mass., and Pittsburgh, Pa. She says all but a small number of checks addressed to retirees in the Buffalo suburb of Depew have been accounted for.
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says he wants a swift investigation into how the mistake happened.
