Bigg’s chain to cut 547 jobs in Ohio, Ky.

CINCINNATI — Bigg’s grocery stores plan to cut 436 jobs in southwest Ohio and 111 in northern Kentucky as part of planned closures and selloffs in the region.

Notice filed by the chain owned by Minneapolis-based Supervalu Inc. comes after Erlanger, Ky.-based regional chain Remke Markets announced this week it would acquire six Bigg’s stores in Cincinnati and its suburbs. Bigg’s will close five others and eliminate 79 jobs from its offices in the Cincinnati suburb of Milford.

Stores closing in Harrison, Ohio, and Florence, Ky., each will eliminate 111 jobs.

The cuts will come by the end of May, according to the filing under the federal Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification Act. Employers must file such notices when they cut 50 or more jobs.
