Investigation opened into Demjanjuk witness

MUNICH — Prosecutors say they have opened an investigation into a former U.S. Secret Service forensics expert who testified at the John Demjanjuk trial after the defense accused him of perjury.

Trial prosecutor Hans-Joachim Lutz told The Associated Press on Thursday that his office opened the investigation after receiving a complaint against former agent Larry Stewart, who gave testimony to the veracity of a Nazi-issued identity card that prosecutors say helps prove Demjanjuk was at the Sobibor death camp.

The defense says the card is a fake and that Stewart’s statements in Munich contradicted his earlier testimony.

Demjanjuk is a former Ohio autoworker being tried on 28,060 counts of accessory to murder on allegations he was a guard at the Nazi’s Sobibor death camp.
