Recalls this week: Hooded sweatshirt edition

NEW YORK — Hooded sweat shirts apparently pose a grave risk to children.

This week’s list includes not one, but four, recalls of children’s hooded sweatshirts and jackets. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. But it seems drawstrings present a strangulation hazard to the young.

Here’s a list of the this week’s recalled sweat shirts along with some other items.

“CANDY QUEEN” GIRLS’ HOODED SWEAT SHIRTS

DETAILS: The sweat shirts with drawstrings were sold under the Candy Queen and Akademiks brand names. The sweat shirts were made in China and Pakistan and distributed by Weeplay Kids LLC of New York.

The sweat shirts have style numbers Q37519, A22090, A393343-3, A79405-226 and A79462-1. They were sold at small retail stores nationwide from February through November 2008.

WHY: The drawstrings through the hood can pose a strangulation hazard to children.

INJURIES: None reported.

“OLD SKOOL” GIRLS’ HOODED SWEAT SHIRTS

DETAILS: “Old Skool” girls’ hooded sweat shirts with drawstrings, made in China and imported by Bobens Trading Co. Inc. of Hicksville, N.Y. The recall involves sweat shirts with long or short sleeves. The style numbers include GC5810, GV105, GV104 and GF254. The sweat shirts were sold at Burlington Coat Factory stores nationwide from November 2007 to September 2009.

WHY: The drawstrings through the hood can pose a strangulation hazard to children.

INJURIES: None reported.

“BLUE HEART” CHILDREN’S HOODED JACKETS

DETAILS: The jackets had the brands Blue Heart and Just a Girl. The jackets were made in China and imported by Franshaw Inc. of New York. The jackets were sold at Burlington Coat Factory stores nationwide from September 2006 through September 2009.

WHY: The drawstrings through the hood can pose a strangulation hazard to children.

INJURIES: None reported.

HOW MANY: About 2,400.

“ATTITUDE GOLD” CHILDREN’S HOODED SWEAT SHIRTS

DETAILS: The sweat shirts were made in China and distributed by Baycreek Inc. of New York. The recalled clothes have style numbers ZZJ-01J, ZZJ-2J, ZZJ-04J or ZZJ-5J printed on the hangtag. They were sold at Burlington Coat Factory and Modecraft Fashions stores nationwide from October 2008 through June 2009.

WHY: The drawstrings through the hood can pose a strangulation hazard to children.

INJURIES: None reported.

HOW MANY: About 1,900.

TEMPERATURE SENSORS

DETAILS: The GE Telaire Airestat and Carrier Single Beam Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Temperature Sensors were made in the U.S. and distributed by GE Infrastructure Sensing Inc. of Billerica, Mass.

The recalled sensors, which are wall-mounted, were sold for commercial use. The products were distributed between November 2000 and March 2005.

WHY: The CO2 and temperature sensors can overheat, posing a fire hazard. GE received three reports of a cracked capacitor causing the product to overheat and smoke.

INJURIES: None reported.

HOW MANY: About 9,400.

ELECTRIC MOTOR CONTROLLERS

DETAILS: The Pumptec electric motor controllers for submersible pump systems were made in the U.S. by Franklin Electric Co., of Bluffton, Ind. They were sold at dealers nationwide from June 2006 through November 2009.

WHY: The product label can come loose and expose circuitry, posing a shock hazard.

INJURIES: None reported.
